VW Passat EGR and Inlet Manifold Problems

A VW Passat came in recently due to rough running and lack of power. When driving the Passat to investigate the lack of power, and to investigate the issues reported, an engine management warning lamp was illuminated.

This was a caused by poor flow through the inlet manifold and and issue with the EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve), we then carried out further checks to the EGR system to work out that the valve was not closing properly. The build up of carbon stopped the EGR Valve from closing.

The inlet manifold and EGR were removed from the vehicle, the manifold was manually was cleaned to remove as much carbon from it as possible and a new EGR valve was fitted to the vehicle. After reassembly the Vehicles ECU was reprogrammed to accept the new EGR valve and we carried out a FORTE Power Clean Intake Clean to make sure any remaining carbon deposits were cleaned away.

Once the repairs were finished we then carried out an extensive road test trying the vehicle at different speeds and under different loads. This is to see how the vehicle's performance registered on the live data readings of our diagnostic equipment. These were then compared to the first recorded data readings from the original road test. There was a big difference in performance and in fuel economy ( highly important ), the EGR readings were correct and no warning lights that came on.

After testing the vehicle we made sure there were no fault codes stored in the engine ECU and as all was clear, returned the vehicle back to a delighted customer.
